Conductor

In 2000 Martha spent eight years as the assistant conductor of the Coro Hispano de San Francisco, where she also was the transcriptionist and interpreter of ancient Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American music.

She has conducted several musicals, operas, and orchestras in the San Francisco Bay Area including Gian Carlos Menotti’s The Medium (2005), Wolgang Amadeus Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte (2005), Viva Concha! by Candace Forest (2006), and Xochitl and the Flowers by Christopher Pratorius-Gomez (2019). In 2017 she was invited as a guest conductor with the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra for their concert “¡Viva Mexico! Beyond Border Walls”.

She directed and produced the annual Mexican Christmas musical “La Posarela” for 13 years, a Community Music Center event which became one of San Francisco’s Latino community most popular celebrations.

As part of her work at the Community Music Center, Martha’s conducting work currently includes the “Coro de Cámara”, specializing in the performance of ancient, classical and folk music of Latin America and Spain; and three community choirs for older adults (“Coro Solera”, “Coro de la 30”, and “Coro del Centro Latino”), which have spawned a national research project investigating the health benefits of choral singing for seniors.
